I'm Jackie Bedford, founder and CEO of Step Ahead, an award-winning recruitment and employability organisation. Throughout my career, I've worked with employers, universities, local authorities and individuals, helping people understand how hiring really works and giving them the confidence to take the next step in their careers.
One thing has become clear to me.
It's not because they lack ability. It's because nobody has ever shown them how the recruitment process really works. Effective employability isn't taught in schools or universities. Our academic institutions are measured on grades. Not on what those qualifications actually lead to.
So people are left to guess. They apply more. They tweak their CVs/résumés. They spend hours preparing applications, often without understanding why they're not getting the results they deserve. Over time, confidence starts to disappear. That's why I created this website. To share the practical advice, honest insight and real-world experience I've gained over the years, so more people can stop guessing, make informed career decisions and find work they genuinely enjoy.
I've worked in recruitment and employability for most of my career. I founded Step Ahead in 1997, and over the years I've worked alongside thousands of employers, supported thousands of people into work and seen first-hand what separates those who secure opportunities from those who keep getting overlooked.
One lesson has stayed with me.
Most of the time, it isn't a lack of talent that's holding people back.
Employers don't always know exactly what they're looking for. Job descriptions don't always tell the full story. And knowing how to interpret what an organisation really needs, then communicate your own value in a way that resonates, is a skill in itself.
The good news?
"It's a skill that can be learned."
Everything I teach is grounded in practical experience, not theory. I've seen how understanding the recruitment process changes the way people approach their careers, and I've seen the confidence that comes when they finally realise they have far more to offer than they thought.
Nothing motivates me more than seeing someone stop doubting themselves, start believing in their potential and secure a role that changes the direction of their life.
It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about helping graduates and the people who support them
Supporting my three sons as they've built careers in footwear design, technology and the performing arts has reinforced something I've believed throughout my career: there is no single definition of success.
Each of them chose a completely different direction. Their interests, personalities and ambitions couldn't have been more different. As their mum, I was there to encourage them, challenge them, ask difficult questions and help them make informed decisions. They each found their own path, but I was privileged to support them along the way.
It's exactly the same approach I've taken throughout my career. Not telling people what they should do, but helping them understand their options, recognise their strengths and make confident decisions about their future.

Three different people. Three different careers. Three different definitions of success.
The one thing they had in common wasn't following the same path. It was having the confidence to choose the path that was right for them, with someone beside them who believed in them every step of the way.
I believe everyone deserves that.

Helping my own sons navigate their careers felt completely natural. Recruitment and employability have been a huge part of my life for more than 30 years, so of course I wanted to support them as they made some of the biggest decisions of their lives.
What I didn't expect was how many other people would start asking me the same questions.
It began with their friends. Then parents. Then career changers. Then people returning to work after a break. I've also met experienced professionals who have achieved a great deal but still aren't sure what their next step should be.
A qualification without direction. Experience without a plan. Potential that nobody has helped them see.
Different people.
Different circumstances.
The same uncertainty. The more people I spoke to, the more I realised these weren't isolated conversations. They reflected a much wider need for honest, practical career guidance from someone who understood recruitment and employability from every angle.
That's why I created this website.
It's where I share my own insights, practical advice and the lessons I've learned over more than 30 years, so anyone can make more confident career decisions and build a career they genuinely enjoy.
